Chandler neighborhood rallies behind 10-year-old battling cancer

Kameron Sherman has only been alive for a decade, but he's facing his second battle with cancer.

An East Valley community is rallying around a 10-year-old boy who's battling cancer -- not for the first, but for the second time in his young life.

Ninety neighbors showed up to welcome 10-year-old Kameron Sherman home from the first of his second round of chemo treatment.

Sherman, who lives in Chandler, has a rare, aggressive form of cancer, has battled it for more than a year now. After getting cleared from his original cancer diagnosis, he relapsed.

“His cancer had metastasized and so now he has another battle ahead of him,” said Tammy Turner, HOA President of the Cantabria community. “All of us here in our community wanted to do something amazing and surprise him, so he’s on his way back of his first day back from his second round of cancer treatment.”

As Sherman's family pulled into the front gate, neighbors lined the street with signs displaying his name, showing they’re behind him.

“Just to support them and show them how much we care about them,” said Turner.

“He perked up since we turned the corner,” said Debbie Sherman, Kameron’s mom. “Thank you guys… this is overwhelming... day one for the rest of his life, so we’re ready to kick it… kick cancer to the curb, and move on with this, aren’t we? Yes!”

One of the homeowners purchased the signs and sold them to everyone in the neighborhood. All the proceeds were presented to the family to help with medical expenses.

“I like it,” Kameron Sherman said. “I like how they put the time in just to make signs just for me and go around the neighborhood just for me.”

As he goes through cancer treatment a second time, Sherman said the community's support gives him strength.

“There are people behind me and encouraging me to go through all this.”

“It’s humanity,” Debbie Sherman said. “It’s compassion at its finest and it’s so humbling for us. We’re very, very blessed.”

His dad Bryce Sherman said this is why his family loves their neighborhood.

“To have such a bad situation get turned into such a great situation, by having all these people love on us, is just amazing," said Bryce Sherman.
