More than 40 dogs and cats were seized from a Phoenix animal shelter after police found they were not being cared for.

Phoenix police officers and the Arizona Humane Society responded to a shelter near 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road for a welfare check on several animals on Wednesday.

Officers said many of the dogs and cats at the shelter, AZ Dog Adoptions, had not received medical treatment and were not being cared for.

Police seized 45 cats and dogs. The Arizona Humane Society said it has 23 dogs and 22 cats in its care. Some of the medical conditions AHS staff are seeing are dental disease, suspected mange and ringworm, and for the cats, upper respiratory infections and ocular discharge.

The investigation is ongoing.
