Father arrested after 4-year-old shot in Phoenix

The shooting happened at a home in the Palo Verde Mobile Manor near 40th Street and McDowell Road in east Phoenix.

PHOENIX — A child is in the hospital in extremely critical condition after being shot in Phoenix on Wednesday, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

The child is a 4-year-old boy, according to the Phoenix Police Department and the shooting happened at a home in the Palo Verde Mobile Manor near 40th Street and McDowell Road in east Phoenix.

The Phoenix Police Department said the caller reported that his son was shot.

Detectives learned that 21-year-old Jose Adame Solis was showing his handgun to his 15-year-old brother inside of his home, police said Thursday.

Solis allowed his brother to handle the firearm, police said. Solis admitted he was on his cellphone while the teen was holding the gun, according to court documents.

While the boy was mishandling the firearm, it accidentally fired, striking Solis's 4-year-old son, police said.

Solis drove the child to the hospital and called police.

Solis has since been booked in jail for reckless endangerment.

12 News spoke with a mother who lives in the mobile home park about what happened.

“I really don't have any words, it's pretty sad, I'm pretty sad about it,” Zuleima Gamboa said.

A mom of three, Zuleima says she can't fathom something like this happening to one of her own children.

While Gamboa didn't hear the gunshot, she was freaked out by all the commotion and went to find her 9-year old.

“He was playing right here with the manager, I honestly got scared because I saw so many cops outside,” she said.

She says the community park is usually pretty quiet and that a lot of kids live in the area.

This is a developing story we will update with new information as it becomes available.
