FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Unofficial election results are coming in and voters in Flagstaff rejected Proposition 480, which would have rezoned an area of land near I-17 and I-40 for a new hospital.

Northern Arizona Healthcare said they are "disappointed" in the results in a statement provided to 12News.

"NAH cannot build a new hospital there without the zoning change, and NAH also cannot continue to renovate Flagstaff Medical Center," the statement said.

Flagstaff Medical Center has been renovated and expanded several times in the past several decades to keep up with the growing population and advancing medical standards. NAH said to accommodate future population growth and to keep up with current medical standards, a new hospital is needed.

The organization said they will begin to evaluate alternative locations for a new hospital.

"It is imperative that we expand, as FMC already is out of space for adult patients many days, which leads to long wait times in the Emergency Department and local patients transported to Phoenix hospitals," the statement said.

72.09% of voters rejected the proposition, while 27.91% approved the measure.
