'We have nowhere to go' | Family losing home after trusting local construction company

Carol Shaw said she spent over $80,000 out of pocket to have her dream barndominium built, but now, with the project still not complete, she may lose her home.

LOTT, Texas — After trusting a local contractor, Lott resident Carol Shaw and her family are facing losing their home.

Shaw hired Clayton Construction back in October 2021 to build her family's dream barndominium on their land.

"We had horses, chicken and even a garden on our land in the beginning," Shaw explained. "This was where we would die and leave to the kids and the grandkids."

Through the entire process, Shaw says there was constant money being pumped into building the barndominium and she spent over $80,000 out of pocket. In turn, the job was never completed and requests from the owner of the company, Clayton Yost, went unheard.

"We thought that he had all the requirements, the bonding, the insurance," Shaw said. "The bank told us he wasn't bonded and he didn't have insurance."

Not long after, home loans began piling up and a lien was put on Shaw's home, causing her debt to grow even larger.

"I believe it was $290,000 we owe the state now," Shaw added, "It went from bad to worse and it was horrid."

Shaw's home is now scheduled to be auctioned off Feb. 6. If that happens, Shaw says she and her family will have nowhere to go.

"We had dreams, now we don't know what's gonna happen because there's no way that just my daughter and I can get everything moved," Shaw said.

6 News reported on Clayton Yost and his company Clayton Construction as a 6 Fix story over a year ago. According to court documents, Yost filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023. Yost is also over $5.7 million in debt, owing customers, other companies and banks, according to court documents.

There have been at least 20 alleged victims of Yost and at least five people have filed lawsuits against Yost and his company.

While Shaw has yet to figure out where she and her family will live if the home is auctioned, she's grateful to get her story out and help prevent anyone else from experiencing what her family has gone through.
