16-year-old injured after shots fired in Chandler, 1 suspect arrested

The incident began with a fight in a Chandler parking lot Friday night before it escalated into gun violence.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Chandler police have arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly firing several gunshots at two brothers who the suspect claims had been harassing him.

Edwin Jones was taken into custody over the weekend for his alleged involvement in a drive-by shooting Friday night near Chandler Boulevard and McClintock Drive that wounded a 16-year-old boy.

Court records show officers recovered up to 12 shell casings at the scene of the incident.

Jones told police he had been in the parking lot of a local restaurant with his girlfriend and family when he was allegedly assaulted by two young men. Jones identified the alleged assailants as two brothers, ages 20 and 16, who he had been feuding with over "financial issues."

After the fight was broken up, the brothers reportedly fled from the scene.

When officers later found the brothers, they discovered the 16-year-old had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was taken to the hospital. The brothers claimed they were shot at for "no clear reason."

Jones initially denied firing the 12 shots near Chandler Boulevard and McClintock Drive but witnesses told police that it seemed as if someone from Jones' group had followed the two brothers.

Court records show Jones allegedly admitted to shooting multiple shots at the brothers as they were fleeing from the parking lot skirmish. The suspect then allegedly drove to the house where the brothers lived and fired more gunshots from his car window.

Officers later recovered a firearm from inside a trash can where the suspect claimed he discarded the weapon.

Jones was booked into the Maricopa County jail and is facing felony charges.

Chandler police said the case is still open and under investigation.
