Mesa police arrest teen suspected of assault

The attack happened in spring 2023. It was only reported on January 4, Mesa police said.

MESA, Ariz. — A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with an assault that happened last year in Mesa, city police said. 

The attack happened on May 29, 2023 near Val Vista Drive and Pueblo Avenue and was only recently reported on Jan. 4 by the victim's stepfather.

Detectives began to suspect the 17-year-old, whose name has not been released because he is a minor, and arrested him Friday morning. He was booked into the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center and is facing a possible aggravated assault charge.

The case is still active and police were unable to confirm further information. Police have not said whether or not this assault was connected to the group of teens known as the "Gilbert Goons."

Arizona's Silent Witness program allows people to send in tips and share information about crimes happening within their local communities. 

The program shares unsolved felony case information in multiple ways, including TV, radio and social media. 

Anyone who has information on a crime or recognizes a suspect described by the program is asked to call 480-948-6377, go to the program's website online or download the Silent Witness app to provide a tip. The identity of anyone who submits a tip is kept anonymous. 

Calls to Silent Witness are answered 24/7 by a live person and submitted tips are accepted at all times. Submitted tips are then sent to the detective(s) in charge of the specific case. 

Individuals who submit tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in the case can get a reward of up to $1,000.
