GILBERT, Ariz. — A man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for murdering his 80-year-old stepfather on Christmas Day in Gilbert.

Michael T. Kaser, 49, was recently sentenced in court after pleading guilty to shooting Michael Kinney after driving home from a Christmas dinner in 2022.

When Gilbert police arrived to the residence on Dec. 25, officers found the windshield of a vehicle riddled with bullet holes and Kinney in the driver's seat. The stepfather died a short time later.

Kaser and Kinney had gotten into a fight during the ride home. The stepson exited the vehicle after they pulled into the garage and fired multiple shots at the vehicle.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said Kaser made callous statements after the shooting that he hoped his stepfather was dead.

Police officers at the scene reportedly heard Kaser say, "I should have killed him a long time ago," court records show.

The defendant allegedly told investigators he had thought about killing his stepfather for the last 20 years.

“This individual showed no remorse for his actions – he wasn’t worried about shooting his mother who was also in the vehicle, he didn’t provide aid to his stepfather but instead continually rejoiced about what he’d done,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said in a statement.

Kaser pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault.
