DPS: Suspect slams car into DPS vehicles, causes crash that leaves Kingman woman dead

Members of the AZDPS State Gang Task Force attempted to contact the driver, only for him to ram his car into theirs and try to flee, the department said.

KINGMAN, Ariz. — A man is behind bars after ramming his car into two Department of Public Safety vehicles and causing a crash that left a 21-year-old woman dead in Kingman, according to DPS officials.

The incident started just after 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26 when detectives with the DPS State Gang Task Force tried to contact the driver of a vehicle parked at a car wash in Kingman.

When detectives approach, the driver, identified as 44-year-old Juan Javier Ortiz, allegedly rammed his car into the detectives' vehicles. Troopers shot at Ortiz who drove away from the scene.

While fleeing, Ortiz crashed into another car at the intersection of Bank Street and Northern Avenue. That crash resulted in the death of the other driver, 21-year-old Sarah Bingham of Kingman, DPS said.

Ortiz was taken into custody with minor injuries and booked into the Mohave County Jail. He could face multiple felony charges. No members of law enforcement were hurt.

The incident is still under investigation and details are subject to change.
