AVONDALE, Ariz. — A 19-year-old in Avondale shot a man following a dispute on Wednesday afternoon, the city's police said. The man who was shot is in critical but stable condition.

Avondale police received 911 calls regarding a shooting in the area near Litchfield and Buckeye roads. One of the 911 callers was later identified as 19-year-old Anthony Hurtado. Hurtado told police he shot someone in "self-defense." When police got to the scene, Hurtado was taken into custody without incident.

Police learned that two juveniles were on Elm Lane playing in what a police report states was "a pile of trash or a toy motorized car." Hurtado came out of his home, also on Elm Lane, and reportedly told the juveniles not to make a mess.

The two juveniles yelled at Hurtado, according to the police report, and Hurtado reportedly hit one of the two children with a piece of cardboard. The two children left and came back with two men.

The four people approach the door of Hurtado's house and one knocks loudly and says "Yo some grown man here just slapped my son and I need to talk to him," the police report states.

The four and Hurtado have a conversation in which the stepfather of one of the juveniles tells Hurtado he can't put his "(expletive) hands" on a kid. One of the men then appears to attempt to hit Hurtado, but misses, slipping and falling on the rocks.

Hurtado goes out of camera view and can be heard saying something along the lines of "I promise, I'll shoot you, back up," according to the police report. One of the men and the two juveniles begin backing up into the street. The other man turns and walks toward the street.

The police report states Hurtado can be heard saying "You have three seconds, three seconds," while he starts counting. Gunshots are then heard and one of the men falls to the ground.

Hurtado is then seen on camera with both arms extending, holding a firearm pointing toward the street where the man is lying, and can be heard saying "I told you, I told you to back up."

Hurtado can also be heard saying "I'm (expletive) sorry man, I'm (expletive) sorry, I'm (expletive) sorry, I'm (expletive) sorry, I pray to God you don't die, I'm so sorry." Hurtado can still be heard apologizing and saying he was calling the cops, according to the police report.

The second man ran to his car and retrieved a firearm, but kept the firearm to his side. The man who was shot got up and walked to the car, and then was taken to the hospital, the police report said.

The second man and the two children were unharmed. The first man was shot at least three, possibly four, times, the police report said and is currently at the hospital with a breathing tube. He is currently in critical but stable condition.

Hurtado is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of disorderly conduct involving weapons.
