Surprise officer shoots man who hit officer with car, police say

Limited information has been released. Here's what we know.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — One person was taken to a hospital after being shot by a Surprise police officer Tuesday at a shopping center, according to Sergeant Rick Hernandez, public information officer with the Surprise Police Department.

The shooting happened near Bell Road and Grand Avenue, officials said. Hernandez said detectives attempted to pull two people over and take them into custody around 3:45 p.m. at the shopping center. Police were there to arrest the 23-year-old suspect on an unrelated felony charge, officials said.

One person was taken into custody but one tried to flee in a car and hit one of the detectives who was standing outside his unmarked vehicle, Hernandez said.

The detective then fired a shot at the suspect, striking him, officials said. Officials said the person is expected to be OK.

The detective who was hit by the car was taken to the hospital and has since been released in good condition.

Detectives were in plainclothes and unmarked vehicles, and as such there was no body camera footage of the incident, according to Surprise police.

The incident is being investigated by the Peoria Police Department as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team protocol.
