Phoenix police following trail of missing money from West Valley teachers' union

Union board leaders said they first learned of misappropriated funds in late November and an internal audit was launched.

PHOENIX — Phoenix police are investigating a case of embezzlement involving a former member of the Cartwright Education Association, the union that represents more than 400 teachers, staff members and workers in the Cartwright School District.

12News began looking into the money problems after receiving a tip.

In an email sent to union members on Wednesday evening, the union board leaders said they first learned of misappropriated funds in late November and an internal audit was launched.

In early December, details of the audit were released to the board. According to the message, the individual in question admitted fault.

On Dec. 21, 2023, the board voted to file a police report.

12News reached out to the Cartwright Education Association through email and social media for an answer.

When reached by phone Wednesday evening, Cartwright Education Association President Melanie Cobos initially denied knowing about the investigation when asked.

Minutes later, she sent the following statement to 12News.

“Financial misconduct of any kind is completely unacceptable. Once we became aware of this situation, we conducted an internal investigation and then reported it to the police. Our executive board will be in full cooperation with the police investigation as we seek to uncover the full details, ensure all member money is returned, and hold those responsible to account.”

12News sent follow-up questions to Cobos including how much money was missing and how the organization learned of the missing money. So far, our questions have not been answered.

The Arizona Education Association also issued a statement to 12News about the investigation.

“AEA has absolutely no tolerance for financial malfeasance at any level of our organization, including within our 231 local affiliates. We take this situation extremely seriously. We will be cooperating fully with the Phoenix Police investigation to ensure that all member funds are recovered and that those responsible are held accountable to the full extent of the law.”

12News reached out to Phoenix police to learn where the investigation stands.

So far, no charges have been filed and no arrests have been made in the case.
