Phoenix chef tasked with creating new version of Taco Bell's Crunchwrap Supreme

Lawrence Smith of the Chilte restaurant in Phoenix is one of three chefs picked by Taco Bell to participate in a new culinary program.

PHOENIX — A Phoenix chef has been picked by Taco Bell to "remix" on of the fast-food giant's signature menu items.

Lawrence Smith, of Phoenix's Chilte restaurant, is one of three chefs from around the country recently selected by Taco Bell to participate in its new TBX program, which recruits talented culinary artists to co-create menu items.

“Our goal with the TBX program is to both shine a light on incredible culinary talent, as well as bring a wider range of flavors, cuisine and inspiration to Taco Bell’s menu,” Taco Bell Global Chief Food Innovation Officer Liz Matthews said in a statement.

Smith has been described as a "rising star" in the culinary world who's known for his innovative cooking style. Bon Appetit magazine recently named Chilte one of the best new restaurants in America.

"Didn’t make it to the Super Bowl with the NFL but I did make it with Taco Bell," Smith wrote in an Instagram post on Feb. 9. "Thank you for the opportunity to create, have fun and live más."

Smith and the other two TBX chefs will be tasked with creating their own unique version of the Crunchwrap Supreme, one of Taco Bell's top-selling items.

Taco Bell fans will be able to taste the new Crunchwrap Supreme creations this year at select locations for a limited time.
