ELOY, Ariz. — Everyone knows firefighters save kittens from trees, but in one Arizona town, the heroics don't stop there. Firefighters in Eloy also save kittens from car engines!

That's right, Eloy firefighters responded to a report of a small kitten stuck in an engine compartment, according to a post on the fire district's Facebook page. Crews could hear the kitten's meowing, but it was harder than expected to free the feline. They had to remove vehicle parts until the little guy was saved!

The kitten, who was named Scooter after Eloy firefighter Jimmy Cowles, who is nicknamed "Shoot and Scoot," was returned to its mother, and firefighters reassembled the vehicle.

But the story doesn't end there. One of the firefighters, Battalion Chief Derrick Ethington, asked what would happen to Scooter, the kitten's mother and another kitten that were taking shelter under a nearby vehicle. An animal control officer said the three cats would be taken to an animal shelter in hopes of being adopted.

Ethington couldn't let the three cats go to the shelter, so instead he called his daughters and asked for them to pick up Scooter, the second kitten now named "Shooter," and the mother cat to bring the family back to his large property, which is perfect for "barn cats."

While the family of cats still needs veterinary attention and will need to acclimate to their new home, the Eloy Fire District is happy to see this story have a truly happy ending.
