Police arrest Liberty High School student for having gun on school grounds

The student said it was an accident that he brought the gun to school.

PEORIA, Ariz. - Police arrested an 18-year-old male student at Liberty High School for bringing a gun to school Wednesday.

According to the Peoria Police Department, police received an anonymous tip and located the gun in the students car parked on campus. Police arrested the student around 7 a.m., before school started.

The student, Michael Helt, said it was an accident that he brought the gun to school, police said. He did not make any threats toward the school or to anyone at the school.

A statement from the police department released Wednesday says, "these matters are extremely serious in nature, cause disruption of an educational institution, and are not tolerated by the Peoria Unified School District or the Peoria Police Department."
