How the government shutdown is affecting this flu season

Millions of federal workers are scheduled to be shut out of their jobs Monday morning, and one of the agencies most severely impacted is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC tracks outbreaks, but according to a contingency plan released hours before the shutdown Friday night, more than half of its staff is expected to be furloughed.

This comes during one of the most severe flu seasons in recent years.

According to the CDC's most recent flu report, as of the week of Jan. 13, more than 14,000 cases of the flu have been confirmed in Arizona for the 2017-2018 flu season.

Depending how long the shutdown lasts, flu reports may take longer to process.

Government shutdown or not, there are other places you can look to track the flu season, including Sickweather, which tracks diseases in real time, using social media.

Think of it as a Doppler of illnesses.

"We have a patent pending algorithm that takes all the info people are putting out there ... There's tons of information on social media all the time, and somebody says they have a fever, we track that and we plot where it's happening geographically," said Dave Switzer, director of media relations at Sickweather.
