14-year-old killed trying to steal during drug deal in Laveen, police say

According to police, the teen was armed with a stolen handgun and began to rob the 18-year-old suspect during the transaction when he was shot.

LAVEEN, Ariz. - A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed Saturday during a drug transaction in Laveen, police said.

Two teens were found with gunshot wounds when officers with the Phoenix Police Department responded to a call of a drive-by shooting near 67th Avenue and Baseline Road around 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Jovanny Pelayo, 14, who was shot in the chest died at the scene. The other victim, 15, was shot in the arms and legs and taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Witnesses reported that two groups were involved in an illegal drug transaction when shots were fired. According to police, Pelayo was armed with a stolen handgun and began to rob the suspect during the transaction when he was shot.

Police said they found a car fleeing the scene and detained four people, including the shooting suspect ,18-year-old Robert Wells.

Robert Wells, 18, is suspected of killing a 14-year-old during a drug transaction. He was booked for second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and burglary.

Wells was booked and faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and burglary.

The investigation is ongoing.
