Officials identify on-duty Phoenix police officer who died after 'medical event'

Police said the event did not occur during a call for service.

PHOENIX — An on-duty Phoenix police officer has died after experiencing a "medical event," the department announced Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, the Phoenix Police Department identified the officer as Mark Aker. He joined the department in 1994 and was assigned to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct.

"Rest in peace Officer Aker; you will be dearly missed," a tweet read from the department. 

Police said the event did not occur during a call for service.
