Havasupai Falls camping permits available

Campground permit reservations for 2018 open at 8:00 a.m. on February 1 and are expected to sell out within hours.

EDITOR'S NOTE: As of 11:30 a.m., only February reservations are still available

For those trying to get into Havasupai Falls, the first day of February is the most important day of the year.

Campground permit reservations for 2018 open at 8:00 a.m. on February 1 and will likely sell out within hours.

The Havasupai Lodge is already sold out, unless you get lucky with a cancellation.

There are two ways to get a camping permit:

1. Go to www.havasupaireservations.com.

2. Call the tourist office at 928-448-2121. Phone lines are staffed 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

No day hikes are allowed; you will have to stay at least one night.

Permit costs:

• A one-night stay is $140 per person.

• Two nights are $171 per person.

• Three nights are $201 per person.

Add $18.33 per night if you're staying on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

There is a new three-night maximum stay, although travelers can book back-to-back reservations if space is available.

Prepayment in full is required at the time you reserve a permit.

Why is it so hard to get a camping permit to Havasupai? Scott Dunn with the Arizona Office of Tourism explained it with this statement:

“It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. And the Havasupai Tribe wants to keep it that way. They are the caretakers of a special place, and the permitting process is designed to prevent that place from being overloved. But I think anyone who is lucky enough to visit Havasu Canyon would agree that the experience is well worth the effort to get there."
