CORDES LAKES, Ariz. — A brush fire that sparked near Cordes Lakes Monday afternoon created heavy smoke that forced the closure of southbound lanes of I-17.

Traffic was closed south of SR 69, but roads were reopened around 9:30 p.m.

ADOT is urging drivers to travel cautiously because of poor visibility.

The fire has burned about 500 acres so far, and crews have stopped the fire's forward progress as of 9:15 p.m.

The Bureau of Land Management says deputies have been warning people in the area, but no evacuation orders have been sent.

The American Red Cross has opened an evacuation center at Mayer High School (17300 E. Mule Deer Dr.) if any residents in the area have been impacted.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
