Man dead after being hit by Phoenix ambulance as it left station

Police said the ambulance was leaving the Phoenix station shortly after 11:30 a.m. when personnel inside felt a bump.

A Phoenix Fire Department ambulance hit and injured a man Monday morning, according to Phoenix police officials.

Firefighters treated the man and took him to a hospital, where he later died, a Phoenix Police Department spokesperson said.

Police said the ambulance was leaving the station shortly after 11:30 a.m. when personnel inside felt a bump. They looked in the rearview mirror, saw a backpack on the ground and found the man.

It's not clear what the man was doing in the area or why firefighters were not able to see him. Police said the station bay doors opened and the ambulance was headed down the driveway when it hit the man.

The man has not been identified.
