Mesa PD investigating use of force during another May arrest

This incident involved a teenage suspect.

Again the Mesa Police Department is under scrutiny following alleged use of force during an arrest.

After responding to an armed robbery, Mesa police officers found and arrested a 15-year-old suspect on May 17.

The arresting officers are now under investigation for use of force during that incident.

The five officers have been placed on leave pending the outcome of the internal investigation.

The 15-year-old boy was with a 16-year-old girl at Circle K in Mesa when police were called to say there was an altercation near the store and the boy had a gun. Later people calling 911 said the boy was breaking into a car in front of the store, according to Mesa Police Department reports.

The boy and the girl left the store and were located by a responding officer a couple blocks away. The boy and the girl fled, but were then held at gunpoint by one officer while others came to the area to help in the arrest, according to police documents.

Police say the male suspect ignored their first warnings, then police gave the instructions more firmly. The suspect began to comply, but then began physically resisting, according to police documents.

The male suspect was shouting profanities and gang slogans as he was arrested, according to police documents.

In the video, police officers can be heard yelling, "stop yelling like a little b****," and "we're not here playing f****** games." The male suspect can be heard calling the police officers profanities.

WARNING: This video contains profanity and violence that may be upsetting to some viewers.

The video shows body camera footage from two different officers. The first officer's video is from the beginning of the video until 21:00. The video picks up again with the second officer's video. Parts in the beginning are blurred, rather than the department redacting the video to hide proprietary or confidential information. The blurring stops at 14:40 in the video. There is audio missing from the first part of the second officer's video.

The 15-year-old suspect was charged with multiple counts including armed robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The investigation was started after reviewing the body camera footage of the incident.

This is the second incident regarding use of force to come out of Mesa this week. A man repeatedly punched by Mesa police officers during an arrest spoke to media Thursday.
