Sheriff: 1 arrested after reckless burning sparks wildfire east of Flagstaff

Forestry officials told residents of Winona to evacuate Sunday.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.- Coconino County Sheriff's Office said it has arrested a person after they started a fire that sparked a wildfire east of Flagstaff.

Coconino County officials say crews had pushed the growing blaze back against the cinder hills in the area by 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The Arizona State Forestry Department says the fire has grown over 50 acres.

The fire has destroyed at least one structure, officials said Sunday.

According to the Sheriff's Office the person arrested was burning something in their yard when the fire got out of control.

Authorities say the wildfire was first reported in the area of Copley Road east of Leupp Road.

Nine crews from Summit Fire, Flagstaff Fire and the U.S. Forest Service fire department are on the scene.
