Child care ads spike on Craigslist before the teacher walkout

A warning for desperate parents

PHOENIX - Desperate times may call for desperate decisions as some parents struggle to find child care during the teacher walkout.

"I guess we're going to have to figure it out ourselves," one parent told 12 News while picking up his child from school.

A quick search of the website Craigslist shows a large spike in ads for private child care since the strike was announced. Many of the ads even specify the idea of a greater need due to the walkout.

One ad says, "Child care during teacher strike," and another advertises with the headline, "Do you need emergency childcare due to Thursday strikeout?"

"I just wish there was more time," Jessica Dominguez said while helping her kids finish their homework.

Dominguez is one of the many stay-at-home mothers offering child care on Craigslist.

"I feel for others who don't have that time to look for somebody or to get to know somebody," Dominguez said.

The ad she posted is one of the few which actually mentions her certifications and state-issued fingerprints. Others just simply ask that you trust the their word on qualifications.

The Arizona Department of Health Services is the agency that licenses child care facilities.

"All child-care workers in child-care facilities are supposed to have a fingerprint clearance card, which is an FBI background check," said Colby Bower with the Dept. of Health Services.

It is important to not that neither police nor the Dept. of Health Services are willing to condone the use of online sites to search for private in-home child care service.

This is a risk which parents must weigh themselves in what some are calling a desperate situation.
