Arizona State University officials plan to resume in-person classes in August

University officials stressed the plans are subject to future recommendations from the Centers of Disease Control and the Arizona Department of Health Services.

PHOENIX — Editor's note: The above video is from Gov. Doug Ducey's announcement when he expanded the state's stay-at-home order on Wednesday.

Arizona State University is planning to resume in-person classes starting in the fall semester.

In a letter to students, university President Michael Crow said ASU has begun planning to resume in-person classes for the fall semester.

The semester is set to begin on August 20.

However, these plans are subject to future recommendations from the Centers of Disease Control and the Arizona Department of Health Services.

"Given that circumstances related to COVID-19 continue to evolve, ASU will implement whatever safety measures and health protocols are necessary to keep students and employees safe," part of the letter read.

"We will communicate to you throughout the summer about how those recommendations may impact future decisions and modifications to campus life this fall."

Anyone with questions should contact the Dean of Students office.

The university canceled in-person classes back in March, as the coronavirus outbreak continued to spread throughout the state.

Later that month, the university said its spring commencement would "move to a virtual, online ceremony" due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Students would be able to participate in ceremonies in December 2020 or May 2021.

The first reported case of coronavirus in the state involved a person who is part of the Arizona State University community.

The person who was diagnosed with the coronavirus had traveled from Wuhan, China.

Health officials wouldn't say whether the person is a student or staff member ASU.
