Montenegro defends Franks' support, bill altering presidential vote

Rachel Leingang, of the Arizona Capitol Times, and political analyst Chris Herstam, take a closer look at why GOP State Rep. Don Shooter was expelled from the House last week and whether his ouster changes what many have described as the Capitol's "culture of harassment."

Republican congressional candidate Steve Montenegro labels himself "a leader of virtue, honor and integrity."

So how could he accept the endorsement of his former boss, Congressman Trent Franks, who was forced out of office by allegations of sexual misconduct?

On this weekend's "Sunday Square Off," Montenegro and I discuss the Franks endorsement; his sponsorship of an Arizona bill that would have radically altered the way we elect presidents; and his response to President Trump's plan to give citizenship to almost 2 million undocumented immigrants.

The special primary election to fill Franks' seat in the West Valley's 8th Congressional District is Feb. 27. Early ballots were mailed to voters last week.

Public and private polls of the Republican primary show Montenegro is neck and neck with Debbie Lesko, both of them former state legislators, atop the 12-person GOP field.

Dr. Hiral Tipirneni and Brianna Westbrook are running in the Democratic primary.
