PHOENIX - The CEO of Waymo told a convention of car dealers that his company's autonomous cars would have avoided the kind of crash that an Uber self-driving car was in, killing a woman.
John Krafcik told the National Auto Dealers Association, "We have a lot of confidence that our technology would be robust and would be able to handle situations like that one."
An Uber vehicle running on autonomous mode hit and killed a 49-year-old woman crossing the street with a bicycle in Tempe in March.
The NTSB is still investigating the crash.
But The New York Times reported last week that Uber has had problems with its self-driving technology that went unreported. The newspaper reported that Uber's autonomous vehicles could only go about 13 miles before a human driver needed to intervene, while Waymo's cars could go more than 5,000 miles before an intervention.
Autonomous car companies are currently not required to report that information in Arizona.
