This Arizona school district is staying open during the teacher walkouts

More than half of this district's teachers want to work on Thursday and Friday.

Parents in the Laveen Elementary School District are breathing a sigh of relief. The district will remain open on Thursday and Friday during the teacher walkout.

“Students need a place to go during the day,” said Laveen Elementary School Spokesperson Kristen Landry.

While most school districts, including the 10 largest in Arizona, will shut down during the walkout, Laveen Elementary Schools will offer a half-day schedule. Students will also be able to get a breakfast and lunch.

“We have a lot of kids on a free or reduced lunch program and we want them to get a nutritious meal,” said Landry.

Teachers in the district were asked if they planned on taking part in the walkout. According to Jeff Sprout with the district more than half wanted to work at least a half day.

“We had many ask us if they could come to work on those two days,” said Landry.

The district serves about 7,000 students. Administrators tell 12 News school will operate on a typical half day schedule including after care programs. Parents that have kids that are not enrolled in the kids care program can pay $20 per kid each day to have someone watch them before a parent or guardian can pick them up.

The district says it plans to resume its normal full day with all its teachers in the class on Monday. They did however say things could change depending on how negotiations or the walkout goes.
