Text a lamp post or dinosaur in Mesa and see what happens!

Here's how it works: visitors grab a map, then walk around downtown looking for giant yellow circles. Follow the directions on the circles and boom, you've made a new friend.

MESA, Ariz. - Have you ever found yourself talking to something that does not talk back?

There's a special project in Mesa that makes it A-OK to strike up a conversation with benches, lamp posts, a dinosaur and even manhole covers.

Mesa Arts Center's Casey Blake says the project comes to the Valley from London.

"Hello Lamp Post invites you to strike up a conversation with an every day piece of street furniture like a bench or lamp post and have a conversation," Blake said.

It also makes it totally acceptable to talk with any number of lifeless objects in downtown Mesa. Here's how it works: visitors grab a map, then walk around downtown looking for giant yellow circles. Follow the directions on the circles and boom, you've made a new friend.

While the game is fun and lighthearted, it's all part of a larger picture project for the City of Mesa.

"We thought this could be a great way to ask some questions to people who live in downtown Mesa and find out what they think makes their city vibrant and creative," Blake said. She adds that the city is in on the game and hopes to gain more insight on how visitors and residents want to see Mesa grow in the future.

Richard Reyes and his son stopped by the dinosaur exhibit, downtown. "I think it's always good to share knowledge with people that our interested in our history," Reyes said.

There are only a couple of days left to check out the project. It runs through April 15th, 2018. For more information click here.
