FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Two Flagstaff High School students' custom shoe designs earned $75,000 for their school.

Flagstaff High earned the top prize in the Vans Custom Culture shoe design contest, Vans representatives announced Tuesday morning.

The contest participants were asked to reflect the themes of "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall" in designing blank Vans shoes.

Students Alyssa Williams and Nicole Dougherty designed the shoes and collectively put more than 65 hours into their creations, which earned the most votes from across the country.

Vans representatives announced the win during a surprise pep rally, where the students were presented a $75,000 check to go toward their art program.

Williams and Dougherty said they would like to use the funds to make Flagstaff High, which was built in the 1940s, feel more welcoming to modern students with murals and designs. They would also like to update the screen printing lab and the graphic design computer lab.

The other four finalists in the contest were high schools from Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Ohio. They each received $10,000 from Vans.
