PHOENIX, AZ, APRIL 26, 2018 – The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has announced its regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for 2018 and 12 News has been honored for Breaking News Coverage: President Trump’s Rally: Violent Clashes.

The team involved in the work that was awarded was fronted by 12 News co-anchors, Mark Curtis and Caribe Devine.

The breaking news coverage was focused on President Donald Trump's rally – where 19,000 cheered on President Trump at the Phoenix Convention Center. Immediately after the president's rally, clashes erupted between supporters and protesters took a dangerous turn. Our 12 News Studios are located in the heart of the violence in downtown Phoenix, with our lobby becoming a refuge for people looking to escape the commotion. Several of our journalists were exposed to tear gas, as riot police worked to contain the violence. 12 News was the only station to carry President Trump's rally live in its entirety, providing hours of breaking news coverage for our viewers.

12 News continues to be the choice station for everything that matters including breaking news. From the Trump rally to the #RedforEd Educator Walkout – viewers count on 12 News, 12News.com and its social media platforms for all the latest developments.

While announcing the awards, RTDNA Chairman Scott Libin said, “At a time when it’s fashionable to bash so-called mainstream media, it’s more important than ever to recognize the extraordinary work of dedicated journalists who serve communities across our country.”

He continued, “In cities large and small, representing a wide variety of ownership groups, these news organizations show why Americans trust local journalists to report fairly and accurately about issues that matter.”

News Director George Davilas added, “As we navigate unprecedented times in our profession, the importance of building and maintaining TRUST with our viewers has never been more important and this recognition serves as an important validation to our audience of why 12 News is Arizona’s News Leader and Arizona’s Most Watched Television Station.”

“Thursday's walkout coverage showed it again,” said Dean Ditmer, president and general manager of 12 News. “We are committed to and now have officially been recognized for by this prestigious regional Murrow award providing the most comprehensive coverage of breaking news events. Clearly with the approximately 75,000 marchers Thursday and the governor’s exclusive personal appearance on 12 News during the march, that 12 News is all about balance, verifying the facts, and helping to provide solutions through our coverage for Arizonans. We listen, We seek, and We solve for our communities here in Arizona.”
