HOLBROOK, Ariz. — A woman has died after the vehicle she and her husband were in was swept away in floodwaters, the Navajo County Sheriff's Office said.

Officials received a call just before 11 a.m. Thursday from the husband -- who was rescued by local residents -- reporting that his 64-year-old wife was missing.

The couple was traveling in a Jeep on Hutch Road, approximately 16 miles west of State Route 377, Wednesday night crossing a wash known as “Seymour’s Crossing.”

The husband told officials that the "swift-moving water swept the Jeep from the dirt roadway and began to push the vehicle downstream where it came to rest."

After an hour, the couple crawled out of the vehicle and were able to get to the riverbank, out of the water, the sheriff's office said. The couple then became separated in the dark.

The husband was found the next morning and was able to call for help. His wife was subsequently found deceased about a half-mile downstream from the Jeep and around 200 feet from the water, the sheriff's office said.

The investigation is ongoing.
