How to prepare for long road trips in extreme Arizona temperatures

Here are some steps to take before you hit the road during these hot Arizona months, according to the state Department of Transportation.

PHOENIX — With temperatures regularly in the triple digits here in the Valley, it's no surprise some people want to pack up the car and go. 

Motorists should always prepare for the possibility that they could be stranded on the road, but proper preparation is even more important in extreme heat. 

Here are some steps to take before you hit the road during these hot Arizona months, according to the state Department of Transportation.

• Must-have items: Fully charged cellphone, extra drinking water for everyone in the car (including pets) and an umbrella for shade

• Take a cooler to keep the water cold and consider adding several frozen bottles to use to cool off or to thaw and drink if needed 

• In addition to an umbrella for shade, consider bringing sunscreen and a loose fitting clothing for sun protection. A wide-brimmed hat could also be used as well

 • Make sure the air conditioner in your car is working and the coolant levels are all set 

• Top off any engine fluids, make sure your battery is up to par and check your tire pressure 

• Keep your gas tank at least three-quarters full 

If you happen to break down while on the road, here are some tips to help stay cool while awaiting assistance. 

• Run your air conditioning or, if it doesn't work, roll down all the windows

• Avoid parking in tall brush, as the heat from a vehicle's undercarriage could cause a brush fire 

• If the inside of the vehicle becomes too hot, everyone should exit carefully and seek out our create a shaded area as far away from the street as possible 

• Be careful walking on roads, keep your shoes on and try to keep pets' paws off the pavement
