What to do if you're involved in a crash on Valley interstates

In most instances, you should move your vehicle to the side of the road immediately.

PHOENIX — In a minor collision on a freeway, it is Arizona state law to move vehicles out of travel lanes immediately.

“Any time you are involved in a minor injury or no injury collision and the vehicles are movable, you need to make your best effort to get them off the freeway to the safest point that you can," said Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. Trevor Graff.

“Get it off to the median, the emergency lane, to a dirt shoulder, even off the highway if necessary and call 911 to let everyone know where you are at," said Raul Garcia, AZDPS spokesperson.

There’s only a few instances when you are not required to move your vehicle.

“You are not required if we are talking about serious injuries or fatalities," said Garcia.

Or, if your car is so severely damaged or broken down to the point that it physically won’t move. In that case, what should you do?

“Remain with your seatbelt on. We definitely do not want you in between vehicles because somehow or another, they are going to get hit. If you have to stand outside of your vehicle, maybe have the hood up, be in front of the vehicles so there’s some cushion between you and the distracted driver," said Garcia.

Most importantly, if you are stranded or see a stranded motorist, take action.

“It’s absolutely appropriate to call 911 and call out a stranded motorist on the highway," said Garcia.

When it comes to a flat tire, the same state law applies, you have to move your vehicle out of travel lanes.

“You physically can drive a vehicle with a flat tire," said Garcia.

Why the first two vehicles remained in the No. 4 lane on I-10 Monday morning is still under investigation. It’s proof of how quickly a minor accident can turn deadly if you don’t obey the law.

“Keep your head on a swivel, look around and understand that folks are driving distracted, impaired, they are sleepy, they don’t see you whether it’s day time or night. Worry about yourself, worry about your safety and the safety of your occupants and look out for those involved in the accident too," said Garcia.
