Drivers on the Interstate 17 southbound in downtown Phoenix likely ran into traffic on Saturday afternoon after a police situation led to the highway being temporarily shut down.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the southbound lanes of the I-17 were closed at Van Buren Street due to a police incident at Grant Street.

The department later closed the southbound lanes of the highway at the Interstate 10 "stack."

The highway was reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.

The northbound lanes were unaffected.

It was not immediately known what led to the closure.

The Department of Public Safety said units were responding to a subject lying in the HOV lane on I-17 southbound at Grant who "possibly jumped from (the) overpass." Fire crews were transporting the person for injuries.
