Police say impairment played a factor in El Mirage crash that injured 9

The crash happened Sunday morning, injuring nine people and closing the highway.

EL MIRAGE, Ariz. — El Mirage police say impairment played a factor in a crash that injured several people, including a 9-year-old child, Sunday morning near Grand Avenue and Thunderbird Road.

Police said paramedics treated nine total victims from four different vehicles involved in the crash. Seven victims were transported to local hospitals, including a 9-year-old boy and an adult female, both in critical condition.

Authorities said the driver of the vehicle found to be responsible for the crash, Jose Sanchez, age 19, of El Mirage, was extricated from his vehicle and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the investigation revealed impairment played a factor in the cause of the crash. Sanchez was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on five counts of aggravated assault and eight counts of endangerment.
