David Johnson holds out to start mandatory minicamp

Johnson enters the final year of his rookie contract that will pay him $1.88 million. He is eligible for an extension and apparently wants it done before the season begins.

It appears David Johnson’s absence from OTAs late last week might not have been due to injury after all. As the Arizona Cardinals begin mandatory minicamp Tuesday, they will be without their star running back. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he is officially holding out for a contract extension.

Johnson enters the final year of his rookie contract that will pay him $1.88 million. He is eligible for an extension and apparently wants it done before the season begins.

Johnson is expected to be the star of the Arizona offense in 2018 after missing 15 games last season with a broken wrist. He led the NFL in yards from scrimmage and touchdowns in 2016, rushing for more than 1,200 yards and gaining more than 800 receiving yards.

He believes he can become the third player in league history to gain at least 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season.

Schefter's tweet is below.
