GLENDALE, Ariz. - Few things went right for the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday as they dropped their season opener at home to the Washington Redskins 24-6.

The Cardinals defense, which had 17 takeaways in the preseason, had a hard time stopping the Redskins offense, which totaled 430 yards on offense. The lone turnover by the Redskins came with less than two minutes left after Adrian Peterson ran a short reception for 53 yards but coughed up the ball when he was tackled by Tre Boston.

Peterson finished with 96 yards on the ground on 26 carries. He had 70 yards on two catches.

The Cardinals offense, on the other hand, couldn't get anything going. Arizona had just 14 first downs to Washington's 30 and totaled just 217 yards of offense.

The Cardinals' lone score of the game came on a 2-yard rushing touchdown by David Johnson with just under six minutes in the fourth quarter. Johnson looked like he had it going on the first Cardinals drive of the game, when he rushed for two first downs, but he finished with only 37 yards on the ground on nine carries.

Quarterback Sam Bradford was unimpressive, completing 20 of 34 throws for just 153 yards and an interception. He also lost a fumble in the closing seconds.

It was the first game for new head coach Steve Wilks. Since 1979, Cardinals coaches are now 0-11 in their debut game with the team.

The Cardinals take on the Los Angeles Rams on the road next week.
