On the Mark: Let's have a conversation about gun laws

Calling for change to prevent the same tragedy from happening over and over again has nothing to do with being liberal. It has to do with being a human.

As the country reels from this latest mass shooting in Southern California, the NRA is already circling the wagons knowing that it will have to go into “damage control” mode with some of its best clients—the ones who work on Capitol Hill.

“But senator,” they will say, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”.  And many of those politicians who get nice fat checks from the NRA will quietly nod their heads in agreement.

Deep down, they know we need to have a discussion in this country about common sense gun laws, but they can’t risk upsetting their golden goose—the golden goose that, when angry, can organize a super PAC and oust that candidate when the next primary rolls around.

I know many of you will call me a liberal for calling for a reset on the way we interpret the 2nd Amendment. Let me say to any of you who think that; I am NOT a liberal.

Calling for change to prevent the same tragedy from happening over and over again has nothing to do with being liberal. It has to do with being a human.

We can surely have better background checks, better mental healthcare and better quality care for our vets who come home wounded.

That’s what I want.
