82-year-old cartoonist hopes cartoon will inspire teens to join anti-gun-violence movement

Dellis does hope that with her recent drawing addressing "March for Our Lives," more students will go out and join the movement.

At 82 years old, you wouldn't think cartooning would be a thing, but for Ann Dellis, it's quite a different story.

Dellis resides at Friendship Village Tempe, a retirement community, where she uses her creative talent of cartooning.

"I've been drawing cartoons probably all my life, by the time I was 7 or 8," said Dellis.

Usually, Dellis draws about her life in a retirement community, but this time around, she drew a powerful cartoon which portrays students attending the "March for Our Lives" walkouts on March 24, 2017.

"We have tried ourselves to change the laws and moderate them across time," said Dellis.

Dellis said she and the retirement community where she lives, are thrilled at the fact the students who were affected at the recent shooting at a high school in Florida are spearheading the efforts to change and moderate gun laws.

She said she took about four to five hours to complete her "March for Our Lives" cartoon.

"This [cartoon drawing] says that on March 24, students march for better laws and for safer lives," said Dellis.

Dellis said she has also used her cartoons to give people in her community a smile, patience and humor.

"Old people don't deal with change very well," said Dellis.

Not too long ago, the retirement's food venues were being renovated and Dellis wanted to create a happier atmosphere, since some of the residents weren't too happy about it.

"I got permission to hang cartoons addressing the problem and making fun of it and that made people laugh and calm down, just a little bit," said Dellis.

Dellis does hope that with her recent drawing addressing "March for Our Lives," more students will go out and join the movement.

"I hope it gives a message that we want our children and great-grandchildren to go out and participate in the regional marches," said Dellis.

Dellis mentions how some of her grandchildren will be joining the movement on March 24.
