US one of few countries that doesn't fund athletes to compete in Olympics

Lesser known athletes may face more challenges in financing their trip to the Olympics. Other bigger names like Michael Phelps or Shaun White manage to land sponsorship deals that can pay their way through competitions.

PHOENIX - According to the Team USA Fund, the United States is one of very few countries across the world that does not fund their Olympic athletes with government money.

The Team USA Fund is a non-profit organization that seeks to collection donations that can be used to help support the athletes that may need additional support for things like training programs, nutrition and sports psychology.

Lesser known athletes or those competing in less popular sports may face more challenges in financing their trip to the Olympics. Other bigger names like Michael Phelps or Shaun White manage to land sponsorship deals that can pay their way through competitions, but securing those contracts can be pretty difficult.
