Undocumented immigrant accused of killing football player detained twice in Arizona

A statement from ICE shows the Guatemalan native has had run-ins with ICE and law enforcement numerous times since he first entered the country in 2004.

PHOENIX - An undocumented immigrant accused of killing former Arizona Cardinals player Edwin Jackson was detained twice in Arizona, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, 37, is accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed 26-year-old Indiana Colts player Jackson and his Uber driver on Sunday morning on an Indiana highway.

Reports state Jackson and the driver were standing outside the car that was pulled off to the side of the road when they were hit.

A statement from ICE shows Guatemalan native Orrego-Savala's has had run-ins with ICE and law enforcement numerous times since he first entered the country in 2004. He was also detained in Arizona twice, once in 2006 and once in 2009.

Aside from Orrego-Savala’s two prior deportations, he was convicted in 2005 for driving under the influence in Redwood City, Calif., ICE reports. Additionally, he has many other misdemeanor criminal convictions and arrests in California and Indiana.

"It's just another tragedy marked up in this illegal immigration fight that we're having and it doesn't surprise me in the lease," said Mary Ann Mendoza.

Mendoza is the mother of Mesa Police Sergeant Brandon, who was driving home after his shift when he was hit head-on by a drunk driver who was also a undocumented immigrant.

She is vocal about tougher immigration laws including border security and ending sanctuary cities. She also works with Advocates for Illegal Alien Crime and is currently in Washington, D.C. speaking with law makers about how to move forward with immigration reform.
