KUSA - He really did tell his wife. Sort of.

While getting off a plane at Norm Mineta San Jose International Airport Friday, a reporter from NBC Bay Area stopped Justin Carrigan for an interview.

Carrigan told the reporter he spent more than $21,000 on his trip to the Super Bowl, but claimed he didn't tell his wife about the final bill.

The video went viral.

9NEWS caught up with Carrigan and his wife Heidi Tuesday to hear the story behind the video.

Justin said after the Broncos beat the New England Patriots, he looked into buying Super Bowl tickets. Heidi said her husband is a lifelong Broncos fan, and knew he planned to go.

She stayed behind to take care of their four-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter.

A receipt Justin shared with 9NEWS shows each ticket cost $4,400 dollars.

"I knew within a $1,000-range," Heidi said of the price.

She didn't know Justin was covering the bill for three of his buddies until they paid him back.

Add in a $3,500 processing fee and the total price landed around $21,000 -- not including hotels and a rental car.

Justin said at he didn't believe he was talking to a real news crew.

"It was one dude, and this guy with this little camera on his shoulder -it looked like something you would buy at Best Buy," he said. "I figured it would be the local station that aired at 3 a.m. and nobody would see."

He added the comment was made in jest.

"Obviously if I'm talking to the news, I figure she's going to see,” he said.

Once Justin saw the video go viral, he called his wife to let her know.

"I said, 'Babe, you're going to see something on Facebook. Love you! That's all!" he said.

"I saw the video and I immediately texted him 'Are you kidding me?'" Heidi said.

She admitted it's not his first hidden purchase.

"I was a little frustrated at first, but ya know, at the end of the day, we’re in it together, long haul," she said. "No one is getting a divorce."

Justin said his friends paid him back. He personally spent between $7,000 and $8,000 on the trip.

Heidi her next stop is the mall.

"After the baby weight comes off, Mama's going shopping," she said.
