Former patients, doctors participate in Tackle Trauma 5K in Tempe

Nearly 500 people participated in the walk organized by the Arizona Trauma Association.

Whether it’s a car crash or a fall from a ladder, countless people and their families are affected by trauma.

They survived trauma and this morning hundreds of runners survived the rain for the Tackle Trauma 5K.

This is the fifth year people recovering from traumatic injuries have gotten together with the doctors and the medical workers who helped save their lives.

Three and a half years ago, Judy Angulo and her husband were driving in Tempe on 7th street in Myrtle with they were hit head on by another driver.

"A young person was under the influence going roughly 90 miles per hour. He crossed over the center line and we were hit,” Angulo said.

Angulo was badly hurt, the car’s engine had impaled her.

"The engine essentially severed my internal organs and my spine and multiple other areas,” Angulo said.

Two years and seven surgeries later, Angulo is on the road to recovery and Sunday morning she laced up her shoes for the Tackle Trauma 5K.

The medical professionals that played a part in saving their lives also run in the 5K, people like Surgeon Joseph Sucher.

“Think about it, you break both your legs, your ribs, you have a brain injury and how much it effects your entire life," he said. "It’s incredible."

Traumatic injury is the leading cause of death for all children and adults up to age 46.
