POST FALLS, Idaho – A suicidal man shot himself outside a Post Falls Church Sunday afternoon, according to officials.
Post Falls Police said around 9:30 a.m. they received a 911 call from a man who said he was suicidal and outside the Real Life Ministries on North Cecil Road. When police arrived on scene, they found a man with a gun to his head under the cross in the church parking lot.
The church was having service at the time of the incident and were placed on lockdown. Negotiators were called in to try to help the man. Officials said at one point he threatened suicide by cop but were able to talk him out of it.
After nearly three hours of negotiations, police said the man shot himself in the chest. Officers threw a flash bang as a way to protect themselves as they went to help the subject.
Authorities are not releasing the man’s identity but they said based on the negotiations, they believe he was a veteran of the Iraq War. Officials said he is from the Grangeville area and is in his 50s.
As of 1:45 p.m. there was no word on his condition.
Real Life Ministries posted on Facebook saying they have canceled the worship night that was planned for later Sunday evening.
