Ohio Gov. John Kasich told a female college student, "Don't go to parties where there's a lot of alcohol" during a town hall event in New York Friday afternoon.
The female college student asked Kasich how he "would help her feel safer and more secure regarding sexual violence, harassment and rape."
Kasich responded by noting Ohio's efforts in supporting college students in their access to "pursue justice" following sexual assault.
He also said that students should know the rules and should not make themselves at risk.
But he went on to say, "I'd also give you one bit of advice: Don't go to parties where there's a lot of alcohol."
The statement received applause from the crowd in attendance, but backlash on social media.
Kasich's comments today show that he doesn't understand the major issue that sexual violence is on college campuses. https://t.co/Ms6bBrTvef
