Arizona will have 3 more US Senate elections by the end of 2024

Arizonans have two years to prepare for all those political ads again.

After a long, hard-fought, ugly-at-times race to fill Sen. Jeff Flake's seat in the U.S. Senate, Kyrsten Sinema will take over come January as Arizona's newest, and first female, senator.

The race between Sinema and her Republican opponent Martha McSally put the nation's eyes right on Arizona and arguably turned the "red state" of Arizona into a purple battleground state.

Millions of dollars were spent on political ads in Arizona - a large majority from these two candidates.

And as Arizonans take a breath of the fresh, political-adless air since all the campaigning started, there's more to come.

Arizonans will vote for a U.S. senator every two years for the next six - twice on the former seat of the late Sen. John McCain.

2020

After Sen. McCain's death, Gov. Doug Ducey appointed former Arizona senator Jon Kyl.

And although he says he's only committed to serving through the current session of Congress, Sen. Kyl could serve to the 2020 election.

2020 is the next general election. Meaning, regardless of if it's Kyl or another Ducey-appointed senator, Arizona voters will cast a ballot for that seat.

2022

This is when things get back to a normal election cycle for voters in Arizona.

McCain's unfinished term is officially up in 2022 as senators serve six-year terms in the U.S. Senate.

The winner of the 2020 election would serve out the rest of McCain's term, which would end after the 2022 election.

But in that 2022 election, Arizona will cast another ballot for the same seat as 2020.

2024

From the time they're elected, U.S. senators serve six-year terms. And according to elementary school math, six years from now is 2024.

That means Sinema will be up for re-election in 2024.

So for the third time in six years, Arizona will cast another ballot for a U.S. Senator.
