Parada del Sol honors John McCain

The late Senator was named this year’ s Honorary Grand Marshal.

Thousands gathered in old town Scottsdale for the 66th annual Parada Del Sol Saturday, where late Senator John McCain was honored.

This year's theme was a salute to Arizona heroes including veterans and law enforcement officers.

“Makes me proud all of those people doing service to our community, our country,” said a parade-goer.

With a special tribute to the late Sen. John Mccain, named this year’ s Honorary Grand Marshal.

“It’s meaningful and we started thinking about Arizona heroes and the first thing that came to mind was John McCain,” said Parade Treasurer Don Chiappetti.

Senator McCain’s wife Cindy was scheduled to attend - but did not make it citing illness.

Chiappetti helped organize the rider-less horse tribute for Senator McCain.

“In an old cowboy tradition when a cowboys dies you put his boots on it backwards in the stirrups on this horse and you send that horse down we are sending a carriage down,” said Chiappetti.

A gesture people still mourning McCain seemed to appreciate.

“I love John McCain, he was an awesome person.”

“I think with the way our country is going today we get a little nervous with the way things are going at the White House, I wish he was still around he was the man that would take of things for us.”

“It warms your heart.” Were some of the comments.

An estimated 30,000 people attended.
