SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas - A special education teacher and a 33-year-old man were killed in a head-on collision early Monday morning just north of Sulphur Springs, Texas in Hopkins County.

Larry Resendiz, 33, was headed north on State Highway 19 when he lost control of his Mustang and veered into southbound traffic, according to a statement from North Hopkins Independent School District. The Mustang struck a school bus driven by 52-year-old Perry Wayne Evans. Both Resendiz and Evans sustained fatal injuries.

Cherrie Brantley, a 44-year-old special needs assistant teacher, was transported to Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas with non-life threatening injuries.

Perry Evans

"Today has been a very challenging day in our school following the loss of Mr. Perry Evans," said Dr. Darin Jolly, superintendent of North Hopkins ISD, on the loss of the special education teacher. "It has been consoling to see the teamwork, love and dedication of our faculty and community through this crisis. We are counseling our staff and students during this time."
