Mysterious death of Desert Vista freshman devastates Phoenix family

For Antone and Carolynn White it still doesn't seem real.

"As a parent you try and protect your kids, thought we did everything we could with the doctor visits and requesting the tests," said Antone White.

White and his wife Carolynn are trying to come to grips with by the devastating loss of their 14-year-old son Chase.

"Everything is so unsettled, we don't have a son and we don't know why," said Carolynn.

It's a mystery that began in January.

Up until then, Chase was the picture of a teen in good health. A freshman at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, he played football, baseball and excelled in academics. Then out of nowhere it came.

"He just started having flu like symptoms," said Carolynn, "he'd have it for a couple of days and then be okay for a week and then it might flare up again."

They family made countless trips to the doctor, emergency rooms or any place they thought could explain why Chase wasn't getting better and recently seemed to be getting worse. Each time, it was the same response.

"Blood and urine and "nothing's wrong, nothing's wrong," Carolynn says they were told.

"Everything came back negative and that's extremely frustrating, to not know," said Antone.

The family had no idea last Friday would be their last day with him Chase. It was Carolynn who went to check on him late that night.

"When I went in the room it was very quiet and I tried to nudge him because he wasn't snoring and he didn't move," she said.

"When I touched his skin, it was very cold to the touch and I could tell he wasn't breathing he wasn't waking up so I screamed for my husband," Carolynn said.

Chase was gone. As they continue to search for answers as to why, they've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from all the people their son positively touched in his short but meaningful life.

"Nothing is going to take away the pain but it makes us feel good that his 14 years weren't wasted," Carolynn said, "he did everything he wanted to do."

The family was told autopsy results and blood work could off them some answers but that could come back anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.

Carolynn and Antone say Chase loved to volunteer so in his honor they are raising money to start a foundation to help other kids get the same opportunities.
